RespubLit is named after the Respublica litteraria or Respublica literarum, a concept known in English as the Republic of Letters, referring to the Enlightenment-era network of the scientific and academic community. 

The Republic of Letters represented a common ground for sharing knowledge, and eventually evolved into a peer-review mechanism integrated into modern scientific research.

Respublit is committed to building on this tradition to maintain best practices for fair, equitable and efficient peer review systems.
